These mini melons will be a big hit, especially with kids, yet it is so easy to make - they are simply strawberry jelly chilled in sliced lime rinds, and then sprinkled with black sesame seeds.
If you're having an adult-only party, you can make some "naughty" mini melons instead. Just replace the cold water with vodka. And yes of course, you can oh-so-generous with the vodka shots! ;)

I've shared the recipe and methods with you below. If you're looking for more than one dish to make, check out my Apple Cheese Ball. Like I said before, it doesn't need to be a retro party.
This Petite Watermelon and the Apple Cheese Ball make great appetizers to make for any occasion, perhaps even your next family dinner? They only need a good amount of resting time, so I'd suggest you make them one night in advance.
Petite Watermelon Jell-O
Idea adapted from Chocolate on my Cranium & modified by The Bakeanista
Ingredients
- 5 limes
- 1 box of Aeroplane Jelly (you can for opt any flavour that you like as long as it's red - I went with strawberry)
- Sprinkle of black sesame seeds or sweet basil seed
Methods
- Cut all the limes in half lengthwise.
- Then if you're as lazy as I am, demonstrate on one shell as an example then get your other half to help scoop out all the fruit with a spoon for the rest of 'em lime shells. :P
- Place the limes in a muffin tin to keep them from tipping over and making a mess all over the kitchen.
- Make the box of Aeroplane jelly according to the directions provided on the box. It was as simple as stirring hot and cold water in. You cannot go wrong! (If you're making naughty melons, swap the cold water with vodka in this step.)
- Carefully spoon Jello into the limes halves, then chill in fridge for several hours until firm.
- Sprinkle black sesame seeds onto the jello to make them appear like "watermelon seeds".
- Cut into slices or leave them as is. Then it's time to surprise the crowd! ;)
How cute is Iron Chef Shellie's plate? |
My petite watermelons did get quite a fair bit of attention with some cooing over how they were so cute, but unfortunately, the jelly turned out a tad bitter and I am suspecting that it could be because we aggravated the lime rind.
Maybe the Boyfriend and I should have been more gentle when digging out the fruits. Oopsie! A tip I read online suggests that you could balance the bitterness with other flavours such as saltiness.
I'd suggest that after you finish scooping out the fruits that you wash the lime shells with salt water, then pat until dry. Or if you have any other tips, please share them with me so I can improve! :)
More cuteness! I love it.
ReplyDeleteThat plate is just awesome :P haha they were so cuuute!!
