Gami and Beer - who's a fan?

If you've not heard of Gami, you probably don't live in the Melbourne CDB or are unfamiliar with the Korean culture here... or you just don't enjoy fried chicken and/or beer.

No, seriously. Gami & Beer is a popular Korean joint which specialises - as its name suggest - in Korean style fried chicken and beer.

It's a great place to catch up with your friends, hang out and have a couple of beers or soju if you like, but definitely not the to-go-place for a first date. ;)

To say that the Boyfriend loves Gami chicken, is an understatement. Seriously, the amount of time he bugs me... countless times!

*on a Wednesday night*

Me: "What should we have for dinner on Friday?"

The Boyfriend: "Can we go to Gami?"

*on Sunday afternoon night*

Me: "What should we have for dinner tonight?"

The Boyfriend: "GAMI!!!!"

It's either "Can we go to Gami?" or a strong exclaimation of "GAMI!!!"

Sometimes I give in, but most of the time, I don't. I know, poor boyfriend. :P

I love how they serve my favourite prawn cracker upon arrival. And as if I'm not already stating the obvious, you cannot be on a diet if you want to try Gami.

I know it does sound pretty unhealthy, but sometimes all you need is some greasy, tasty fried food. ;)

Before taking you through to the much-talked-about golden-battered chicken, you also need to keep in mind to also order the corn and cheese to snack on whilst they deep fry your chicken order.

Simply corn and cheese. Yes, you've read that right!

It really is simply corn and cheese... except it is so unexpectedly good. Who would have thought, eh?

Sweet corn kernels, baked with mayonnaise and topped with a generous amount of mozzarella.

I don't know what the secret recipe is to this dish, because I've tried replicating this at home, but it just doesn't taste as good.

And voila - the highlight of Gami. There are 3 flavours of Fried Chicken for you to choose from: original, sweet chilli, and sweet soy garlic.

From my recent visit, I think they've added a Spicy option too - not sure if it's a seasonal thing though.

Having tried all 3 of the original, sweet chilli and sweet soy garlic over my couple of visits, I have to say the sweet soy garlic stands out most!

The original is nice, but if you're going to have half a chicken just between two, you'll find that it is quite a struggle as it can get quite dry. Well, me thinks it's a West Malaysian thing - us and our sauces. :P

As for the sweet chilli version, well, both the Boyfriend and I aren't fans of chilli so we're somewhat biased... so if you like your food spicy, I'd say give it a go!

Crunchy, succulent and full of flavour. Period. But it's not something that I'd want to have time and again, maybe once a couple of months. Although I bet you the Boyfriend will try to negotiate it down to once a month.

I'm not saying that Gami isn't good, but it can get quite jelak (to be satiated/surfeited by an excess of food, too much of the same food, or with food that is too rich, to the extent that one is repulsed by it) for me. But of course the Boyfriend would beg to differ.

All flavoured fried chicken also comes with a complimentary side dish of cabbage salad and radish pickles which we have never finished.

The boys have (which includes the Boyfriend, Brudder and our mutual friend, Steve) never, mark my words, NEVER touched the vegetables at all. And I can't possible polish it off all by myself, so yeah.


There are two Gami branches - both on Little Londales Street. One is located nearby the Flagstaff Garden, but I have only been to the one in between Russell and Exhibition Street.

They're more often than not really packed, even on weeknights so don't forget to book ahead, or you might find yourself walking away with disappointment.
