Le Petit Gateau - the best in town! ;)

Whenever people talk about 'good desserts' in the Melbourne CBD, many would suggest the over-rated Brunetti, whilst being totally unaware of Le Petit Gateau's existence.

I have to say that Le Petit has always been a personal favourite and they, without a shadow of doubt, certainly serve the best cakes in town. 

On my every visit to Le Petit, I will have to peruse through all the delicious selections up at the glass counter for quite a good while, undecided on what to order.

But after numerous visits, I've tried most of the cakes there. I've even compiled several pictures from the visits throughout the years I've been here in Melbourne to pull this post together.

The Pear Tart sadly wasn't one of the best I've had. As pretty as it might have looked, the taste wasn't up to par. The tart base was soft and the almond flavour wasn't 'oomph' enough to send me - a pear tart fan - going ooh-and-ahh.

Well, it could very well be due to the fact that it was displayed for way too long, as I remember arriving shortly before 5pm to get the tart. Maybe I should get in early to give it another go.

The Cosmopolitan - carrot cake base, layered with white chocolate cheese cake and topped with raspberry jam - was a really unique combination. Indeed a very different take on carrot cake, but wasn't quite that spectacular overall.

The Hazelnut Millefeuille, however, is really divine I must say. Look at all that gorgeous layers harmoniously put together.

It wasn't too rich a cake and I like how the praline added an airy, and nutty touch to it. But regardless, it is just not as good as the Brownie and Passionfruit Chocolate Gâteau.

This. Is. The. Bomb. 

The Brownie and Passionfruit Chocolate Gâteau, as its name suggest is made up of a rich brownie base, crisp crunchy praline, a layer each of smooth passionfruit custard and chocolate mousse, then lastly, finished off with a glistening chocolate ganache topping with a tangy passionfruit jelly sitting atop.

I loved it! Trust me, as rich as it sounds, you'd come back craving for more! I dare say that I don't mind having this on a daily basis if my waist line can afford to. That's how good it is.

I love peanut butter so I simply had to try their popular Peanut Jelly Cake and boy, I liked it too! I would thus rank the cakes in the respective order if you care to know my preferences at all:

#1: Brownie and Passionfruit Chocolate Gâteau

#2: Hazelnut Millefeuille

#3: Peanut Jelly Cake

With such awesome previous experiences, one could never imagine how bad a Black Forest cake could turn out to be. Especially at Le Petit.

But sad to say, the Black Forest cake was indeed very disappointing. It wasn't BAD to the extent that it was inedible, but it just wasn't good enough to make me want to take another bite after the first.

Something has to be done to fix this. He has proved us well with his other cakes, I'm very sure Pierrick Boyer can do better than this!

And the final criticism that I have of Le Petit is, I didn't like their macarons at all. The shells were a big disappointment.

They weren't crunchy on the outside, nor were they chewy in the inside. They were just soft and what's even worse is that I could barely tell what flavours they were. :(

Ah wells, I believe that one can never be perfect, and if their forte is cakes, then so be it. Should I have any cravings for macarons, I'd just head back to Luxbite for a fix. Easy-peasy!

Regardless, I'd still dub Le Petit to be among the best in the Melbourne CBD; no doubt winning Brunetti hands down. If you're a sweet tooth, Le Petit is a MUST visit and you simply HAVE TO try the Brownie and Passionfruit Chocolate Gâteau! Take my words for it. ;)
